Fifty-four men took the field in a Mariner uniform in 2016. Just twenty of them, exactly half of the current forty-man roster, are in camp in Spring 2017 as part of the big-league squad.

That means, with quick public-school math… twenty guys on the Spring Training roster are brand new, like, wear a name tag kinda new. And thirty-four guys who played on the big club last year aren’t on the roster, maybe hanging on with some ethereal Ross Eversoles, maybe wearing a World Series ring.

Nori Aoki, waived, picked up by the Astros in November. Wonder if they took his 5.5-million dollar salary along with him.

Jonathan Aro, back on the Mariners’ farm.

Joaquin Benoit, traded to the Blue Jays, now with the Phillies.

Arquimedes Caminero, released in December. Which sucks.

Steve Cishek, ha. Just kidding. He’s in camp as this is written.

Steve Clevenger, free agent, likely never to see a Mariner uniform again. If he’s truly a changed man, more power to him.

Mayckol Guaipe, yeah, we don’t remember him either, just signed a free agent contract with the White Sox.

Franklin Gutierrez, Death to Flying Things, free agent, no contract.

Chris Ianetta, free agent, signed with the Diamondbacks.

Steve Johnson, free agent, no contract.

Nate Karns, traded to the Royals for Jarrod Dyson.

Wade LeBlanc, to the Pirates for a player to be named.

Dae-ho Lee, free agent, no contract.

Adam Lind, free agent, no contract.

Ketel Marte, traded to the Diamondbacks.

Cody Martin, on the farm, we think, as baseball-reference.com shows no transaction.

Wade Miley, traded to the Orioles midseason for Ariel Miranda.

Mike Montgomery, as noted right here on Playin’ in the Dirt, was traded to the Cubs and ended up a World Champion.

Vidal Nuno, traded to the Dodgers in November for Carlos Ruiz.

Blake Parker. Bit of a story here. Blake made one game appearance for the Mariners, pitched one inning, gave up one hit, one walk, no strikeouts, no runs, no decision, was waived in August, picked up by the Yankees, waived in October, picked up by the Angels, waived in November, picked up by the Brewers, waived in December, picked up again by the Angels. Man, I’d get rid of my damn cell phone.

Joel Peralta, released in June, signed by the Cubs. Didn’t play in  the postseason.

Donn Roach, free agent, no contract.

Dan Robertson, free agent, signed with the Indians in November.

David Rollins, whoa, holy crap. Between November 18 and December 23, Merry Christmas and what not, but oh my god. Dude gets waived by the Mariners and picked up by the Cubs, then waived/picked up by the Rangers, Phillies, Rangers again, and back to the Cubs. All that in five weeks.

Stefen Romero, released in November, no contract.

Adrian Sampson, waived, picked up by the Rangers in November.

Luis Sardinas, traded to the Padres in August for a player to be named.

Seth Smith, traded to the Orioles in January for Yovani Gallardo.

Drew Storen, free agent, signed by the Reds in January.

Jesus Sucre, ah Sweet Jesus, and there’s gotta be a Jesus joke in here somewhere, but Jesus was traded to the Devil Rays just last week for a player to be named later… we’re waiting…

Chris Taylor, traded to the Dodgers in June for Zach Lee, and Taylor nuked it in the early going, putting up a 3-for-5 night with LA in July. Pitching prospect Lee, meanwhile, um, never played for the Ms’ big league club as he went 0-9 in 14 appearances in Tacoma, then got cut loose and picked up by the Padres in December. So we got basically squat for Taylor.

Taijuan Walker, traded to the D-Backs with Marte for Curtis, Haniger, and Segura.

Joe Wieland, traded to the Braves in September for a player to be named, now a free agent, no contract.

Tom Wilhelmsen, the whole why did we bring him back from Texas thing saved for another day, The Bartender was released in November and signed last week by the Diamondbacks.
